Jonathan Bodrero, an associate professor of Mathematics, has been highly involved with the development of the Quantitative Literacy Learning Outcomes for Interstate Passport. He has been teaching for 19 years at Passport Network Member Institution Snow College. Bodrero has experience with outcomes-based assessment as he chaired the Math General Education Tuning team for the State of Utah and served as institution point person for the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Multi-State Collaborative to Advance Quality Student Learning. Bodrero earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brigham Young University.
Bodrero’s prior experience with AAC&U has served him well in the role of Faculty Team Chair of the Quantitative Literacy Interstate Faculty Team. “The experience of developing Passport Learning Outcomes was beneficial to me as I was better able to see the core components of quantitative literacy and how it is achieved in a variety of courses. Since then, I have changed my own syllabi to include the learning outcomes for each of my courses. This has increased transparency with my students as they know (and are often reminded of) the main outcomes of the course.”
“Working with colleagues from both two-year and four-year institutions from a variety states allowed for significant discussion about each of the learning outcomes and what constituted the level of proficiency in the various courses. With so many different perspectives, there was always some give-and-take. However, I am pleased and impressed with the overall process of determining the outcomes and the proficiency criteria. The Passport gives me confidence that students transferring to or from Snow College have met the learning outcomes and faculty can build on them in subsequent courses.”
